Earlier in the year when I was working on my schedule for the season, I saw an opportunity to compete in Las Vegas Motor Speedways Night of Fire, one of The Bullrings marquee events at the famed short track, and with the cooperation of GMS Racing I was able to fly from Daytona, after the NASCAR Xfinity Series race to Las Vegas.
This race turned out to be somewhat of a homecoming for myself, the first time I competed and my first win in Legend Cars was at The Bullring, almost 10 years ago, so it was a lot of fun to come back and work with TJ Clark and the Spencer Clark Driven Development team again.
I certainly felt right at home when I got to hit the racetrack, topping both practice sessions and qualifying 2nd, .04sec off the fastest time, a 75% field invert would mean I would start the feature event from 11th, being sure to make for an exciting race.
The Winter Heat championship at Charlotte Motor Speedway started on the first weekend of December on the tight & tricky 1/5 mile oval. Although showing promising speed from the second I hit the racetrack, my championship campaign got off to a slow start, whilst restarting on the front row of the opening feature race, a hit from behind sent me backwards into the wall. My crew made the necessary repairs to get me back on track and I managed to salvage a 3rd place finish. The US Legend Cars World Finals was definitely an event circled on my calendar, but it wasn’t going to be an easy task to make the starting grid. The event at the new Dominion Raceway in Virginia was scheduled for the same weekend that I was due to be in Phoenix, Arizona, working on the #23 NASCAR Camping World Truck of Spencer Gallagher and GMS Racing.
Not to be deterred by a scheduling conflict, I recruited the help of
my good friend and fellow racer Dylan Smith to drive my trailer to the track Thursday night and get the #23 Legend Car through technical inspection. Meanwhile, after a long day of working at the racetrack in Phoenix on Friday, I flew home overnight, landing in Statesville at 6am and immediately made the 6hr drive to Dominion Raceway. Luckily the plan came together and I arrived at the track just in time for final practice!
