The 2013 Jack in the Box Summer Shootout series held on the infield at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, is the toughest legend car racing in the USA and Australian driver Bronson Butcher continues to make an impact.
Having taken over the reigns of the #23 Allegiant Travel sponsored car from ARCA Series/NCWTS driver Spencer Gallagher, who had been sidelined after a violent wreck in a previous race at Michigan International Speedway, Bronson brought home a 6th place finish in his first outing in a Legend Car since 2010.
Drama and tough competition highlight the Summer Shootout series every year and this was demonstrated in round 6. Having been relegated to the rear from an early incident, Butcher drove an inspired race to be in the 3rd position with 1 lap to go and as they approached the final turn, the 2 leaders collided and opened the doors to the young Australians first victory of the Series, however, a hit from behind saw those hopes vanish as a huge pileup on the front straightaway coming to the checkered flag marred the end to a brilliant drive.
Suffering extensive damage, it took a mammoth effort by the Speedway Legends / GMS Racing team to repair the Allegiant Travel car for the next round a week later. Unfortunately it wasn’t ready till qualifying and a faulty transponder was not detected, meaning the Aussie driver had to start from the rear yet again.
Bronson drove superbly and avoided the carnage as he made up 22 positions to be running as high as 3rd. “With about 12 laps to go, my brakes failed. I had to change my driving style which burnt the outside tyre some, but in the closing stages I was able to hold station and finish 5th, which is my best finish in the series thus far.”
The final rounds yielded Bronson’s best results of the series, finishing top 5 in the final 3 rounds. “It’s encouraging to finish the season strong like this, having not been in a racecar for such a long time, it shows what having great support can do for your results. Hopefully this is the start of something more and we can continue to be on track and fight for victories!”
While those plans develop for Bronson, the Mooresville, North Carolina based Australian is working for the Allegiant Travel race team as a mechanic and pit crew member for the #23 ARCA Racing Series car and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series entry of Spencer Gallagher.
Special thanks to GMS Racing, The Gallagher family, Allegiant Travel, Speedway Legends and Back Straight Massage for their support.
